Thanks to Laura Casella and the Global News Montreal team for the awesome collaboration on this important topic. Some important statistics:
  • 15% of all drownings happen in backyard pools
  • the majority of those 15% involve children aged 1-4 years old
  • 85% of those drownings involve absent or distracted supervision
  • 100% of those drownings are fully preventable

‍♀️ The “ABCD”‘s of SWIM SAFETY for Backyard Pools

  • A – always watch your kids: active supervision, no distractions
  • B – be able to swim: sign up for lessons year round, start as of 3 months
  • C – checklist for securing your pool: permanent fence with self-closing and self-latching gate. See the official Qc legislation here
  • D – discuss the rules with your kids: write out the rules, post them visibly, and talk about them
